Google celebrates Valentines Day and inventor George Ferris with interactive doodle

“I see nothing in space as promising as the view from a Ferris wheel.”
~~Elwyn Brooks White,
(July 11, 1899 – October 1, 1985), also known as E. B. White, American writer, contributor to The New Yorker magazine, co-author of the English language style guide, The Elements of Style, ("Strunk & White"). He also wrote books for children, including Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little. Quote taken from The Points Of My Compass.

Google has integrated two themes with a colorful, interactive doodle that celebrates Valentines Day and honors engineer George Ferris, inventor of the Ferris Wheel.

Happy Valentines Day and Happy 154th birthday to George Ferris born on February 14, 1859 (d. November 22, 1896), engineer most famous for inventing the original Ferris Wheel for the 1893 Chicago World’s Columbian Exposition.

The doodle (see video above) features two Ferris Wheels surrounded by a midnight blue sky and surprise animal pairings. Pressing the heart button spins the Ferris Wheels and displays surprise images of paired animals -- elephant & monkey, turtle & rabbit, horse & tiger, frog & dolphin, octopus & bear, octopus & duck, hippopatomus & bird, etc. -- all having heart-to-heart moments and out on the town.

Born George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr. Ferris was born on February 14, 1859, in Galesburg, Illinois, the town founded by his namesake, George Washington Gale.

His parents were George Washington Gale Ferris Sr. and Martha Edgerton Hyde.

In 1873 George entered the California Military Academy in Oakland, graduating in 1876.

That fall he enrolled at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. There he studied civil engineering and engaged in extracurricular activities, including the football, baseball, and rifle teams and the Glee Club.

Although required to be reexamined in some courses before passing, he received his engineering degree in February 1881, with a senior thesis titled, "Review of Wrought Iron Deck Bridge on the Boston Hoosac Tunnel & Western Railway at Schaghticoke, N.Y."

Ferris began his career in the railroad industry and was interested in bridge building. He died a few months after his father passed, at 37 years old from typhoid fever.

Happy Valentines Day America

“To-morrow is Saint Valentine's day,
All in the morning betime,
And I a maid at your window,
To be your Valentine.
Then up he rose, and donn'd his clothes,
And dupp'd the chamber-door;
Let in the maid, that out a maid
Never departed more.”

~~ William Shakespeare, Hamlet,
Act IV, Scene 5
Valentine's Day
as ruefully mentioned by Ophelia in Hamlet (1600–1601

Saint Valentine's Day, commonly known as Valentine's Day, or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is observed on February 14 each year. It is celebrated in many countries around the world, although it remains a working day in most countries.

The first recorded association of Valentine's Day with romantic love was 631 years ago in Parliament of Foules (1382) by Geoffrey Chaucer.

Chaucer wrote:

For this was on seynt Volantynys day
Whan euery bryd comyth there to chese his make.
["For this was on Saint Valentine's Day, when every bird cometh there to choose his mate."]

This poem by Chaucer was written to honor the first anniversary of the engagement of King Richard II of England to Anne of Bohemia. A treaty providing for a marriage was signed on May 2, 1381. (When they were married eight months later, they were each only 15 years old).

The most popular martyrology associated with Saint Valentine was that he was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians, who were persecuted under the Roman Empire; during his imprisonment, he is said to have healed the daughter of his jailer Asterius.

Legend states that before his execution he wrote "from your Valentine" as a farewell to her.

Today, Saint Valentine's Day is an official feast day in the Anglican Communion, as well as in the Lutheran Church.

The Eastern Orthodox Church also celebrates Saint Valentine's Day, however on July 6th in honor of Roman presbyter Saint Valentine, and July 30th, in honor of Hieromartyr Valentine, the Bishop of Interamna.

Numerous early Christian martyrs were named Valentine. The Valentines honored on February 14 are Valentine of Rome (Valentinus presb. m. Romae) and Valentine of Terni (Valentinus ep. Interamnensis m. Romae). Valentine of Rome was a priest in Rome who was martyred about AD 269 and was buried on the Via Flaminia. The flower crowned skull.

The modern cliché Valentine's Day poem can be found in the collection of English nursery rhymes Gammer Gurton's Garland (1784):
The rose is red, the violet's blue,
The honey's sweet, and so are you.
Thou art my love and I am thine;
I drew thee to my Valentine:
The lot was cast and then I drew,
And Fortune said it shou'd be you.

According to the U.S. Greeting Card Association approximately 190 million valentines are sent each year in the US. Half of those valentines are given to family members other than husband or wife, usually to children. When you include the valentine-exchange cards made in school activities the figure goes up to 1 billion, and teachers become the people receiving the most valentines. Also, many send Valentines Day chocolates and other candies.

New traditions have evolved with the internet. Millions of people today use digital (e.g., eCards, eCoupons, etc.) to send Valentine's Day greeting messages. An estimated 15 million e-valentines were sent in 2010. Below are two sets of Valentines Day card collages, to view detail, zoom in 150% to 200%.

Desilva + Phillips hosts 11th Annual DEALMAKERS SUMMIT - You should have been there! See what you missed!

“Media is moving from offline dollars, to digital dimes, to mobile pennies ... That’s where I think all of us has to worry about … it’s happening faster than anybody can imagine … that leads to the other kind of competition - audience … you have to have global optimized for tablet, smart phones … must have a good product and a responsive audience regardless of your delivery system ... there are no shortcuts.”
~~ Elisabeth DeMarse, Chairman, CEO and President, The Street
, first group panel, "Adapting to Changing Media Platforms," at Desilva + Phillips DEALMAKERS SUMMIT

The "see what you missed video" montage of the DeSilva+Phillips Dealmakers Summit 2013 is here!

On Thursday, February 7, 2013, top dealmakers in the Media, Advertising & Marketing Services, Information Services, Education and Healthcare Communications Industries gathered to attend the Desilva + Phillips Dealmakers Summit at New World Stages in New York City.

The annual event, 11th year, explores trends driving deal outlooks for the media and information industries and insights on key sources, challenges and solutions for the year ahead. Other relevant content was discussed along with unparalleled networking throughout.

Daniel McCarthy, Partner, DeSilva + Phillips began with an introduction presentation “The 2013 Deal Outlook: Trends and Opportunities,” and introduced Chairman and Founder of AMRinternational, Denzil Rankine, next up to the podium.

Rankine’s presentation “The next challenge in B2B information: The shift beyond workflow to business solutions” reviewed the conclusions of research collaborated by his company and Desilva + Phillips. The new white paper was released later in the day, and focuses on media strategy and the B2B information framework.

“As a journalist I felt I had to do my homework before, and I talked to a lot of people about Robert and a lot of superlatives came out … smartest editor … most perspective man at the table…often wittiest…I don’t think there is any other CEO in the world who can write a memo like Robert Thompson…I'm looking forward to his first letter to the shareholders.”
~~ Stephanie Mehta, Keynote Interviewer

Executive Editor, Fortune. Quoted at Desilva + Phillips DEALMAKERS SUMMIT introducing Keynote Speaker, Robert Thompson, CEO, News Corporation

Stephanie Mehta, Executive Editor, Fortune, keynote interviewer opened the summit with an introduction to Robert Thomson, CEO of News Corporation.

The discussion focused on the deal outlook for 2013 and aspects of trends and opportunities.
Mehta shared major aspects of Thomson's stellar career with the audience -- intellect journalist, top editor for major publications -- before his latest tenure as CEO of News Corporation and then opened with a discussion pertaining to the recent news of News Corporation splitting into two companies -- entertainment and publishing groups. Thomson believes sharing assets and content across all platforms to be one of the most important aspects for the publishing company with investment, opportunity and growth added benefits for both publishing and entertainment businesses.

The first group panel, “Adapting to Changing Media Platforms” was moderated by Russell Adams, Editor – Markets, The Wall Street Journal. Adams brings extensive experience as a media reporter and has a reputation for asking interesting and thought provoking questions.

Panelists Paul Bascobert, COO, Bloomberg Media; Elisabeth DeMarse, Chairman, CEO and President, The Street, Inc. and Ann Sarnoff, COO, BBC Worldwide America. Adams’ opening question -- “What types of competitors specifically and generally are you most worried about now that have emerged recently that keep you up at night” -- produced great answers.

Interesting takeaways were the consensus that programmatic ad buying is here to stay but indoor and outdoors media channels are crucial -- must reach consumers in all parts of the day -- for example, reach consumers indoors beginning with waking up in the morning to heading outdoors to work and throughout the entire day and night.

For those of you who weren’t able to attend this outstanding event, this article will be updated regularly with updated highlights of the various panel discussions and disruption segments. Also included will be a “see what you missed” video featuring highlights of the event and “One to One” interviews with key speakers, leading executives and top dealmakers.

Google celebrates anthropologist Mary Leakey’s 100th with exploratory-inspired doodle

“I dug things up. I was curious. I liked to draw what I found” … “I had never passed a single school exam, and clearly never would.”
~~ Mary Leakey

(February 6, 1913 – December 9, 1996) British archaeologist and anthropologist, and world renown distinguished fossil hunter. Leakey discovered the first fossilized Proconsul skull, an extinct ape now believed to be ancestral to humans.

Today, would have been Leakey’s 100th birthday, and Google paid homage to her life and works with a lovely doodle, an exploratory-inspired theme representing one of her many achievements – the discovery of 3.5 million-year-old fossilised hominid footprints. She is also known as a “giant in the study of human origins.”

Happy 100th B-Day Mary Leakey! Leakey also discovered the robust Zinjanthropus skull at Olduvai Gorge. For much of her career she worked together with her husband, Louis Leakey, in Olduvai Gorge, uncovering the tools and fossils of ancient hominines.

She developed a system for classifying the stone tools found at Olduvai. She also discovered the Laetoli footprints.

In 1960 she became director of excavation at Olduvai and subsequently took it over, building her own staff. After the death of her husband, she became a leading palaeoanthropologist, helping to establish the Leakey tradition by training her son, Richard, in the field.

Leakey, a renowned paleoanthropologist, had not only conducted significant research of her own, but had been invaluable to the research careers of her husband Louis Leakey and their sons Richard, Philip and Jonathan.

“Mother gave us every freedom to learn by experience as early as I can remember …This gave me tremendous self-confidence and taught me responsibility at an early age. As I grew I was able to take on more responsibility and in a way it always put us as children ahead of the pack. It encouraged and enhanced leadership skills.” ~~Philip Leakey , youngest of 3 sons to Mary and Louis Leakey (source: *Christian Science Monitor, see below)

Facebook reaches the big 010: Happy B-Day to you

"I used to do Facebook but you get a little too wrapped up in that stuff. Its more distracting than anything so I don't any more. I left it behind. I detoxed!"
~~ Emily Stone

American actress and 2012 People’s Choice Award, Favorite Movie Actress

Facebook that controversial social networking service with media, social, political and cultural implications launched in February 2004, and turns 10 years young today. As of December 2012, Facebook had over 1.2 billion active users, more than half of them using Facebook on a mobile device. Happy Birthday Facebook! Where's the Google doodle?

Founded by Mark Zuckerberg with his college roommates and fellow Harvard University students Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes, the website's membership was initially limited by the founders to Harvard students, but was expanded to other colleges in the Boston area, the Ivy League, and Stanford University.

Mark Zuckerberg wrote Facemash, the predecessor to Facebook, on October 28, 2003, while attending Harvard as a sophomore. According to The Harvard Crimson, the site was comparable to Hot or Not, and "used photos compiled from the online facebooks of nine houses, placing two next to each other at a time and asking users to choose the 'hotter' person.

With success comes controversy particularly with Facebook. Zuckerberg hacked protected areas of Harvard's computer network and copied the houses' private dormitory ID images. Harvard at that time did not have a student "facebook" (a directory with photos and basic information), though individual houses had been issuing their own paper facebooks since the mid-1980s. From it’s first 4 hours online, Facemash attracted 450 visitors and 22,000 photo-views.

According to an article from Rolling Stone in July 2008, the site was quickly forwarded to several campus group list-servers, but was shut down a few days later by the Harvard administration. Zuckerberg was charged by the administration with breach of security, violating copyrights, and violating individual privacy, and faced expulsion. Ultimately, the charges were dropped. The Battle of Facebook, Rolling Stone, NY July 2008,

Zuckerberg expanded on this initial project that semester by creating a social study tool ahead of an art history final, by uploading 500 Augustan images to a website, with one image per page along with a comment section. He opened the site up to his classmates, and people started sharing their notes.

The following semester, Zuckerberg began writing code for a new website in January 2004. He was inspired, he said, by an editorial in The Harvard Crimson about the Facemash incident. On February 4, 2004, Zuckerberg launched "Thefacebook", originally located at thefacebook.com.

Six days after the site launched, three Harvard seniors, Cameron Winklevoss, Tyler Winklevoss, and Divya Narendra, accused Zuckerberg of intentionally misleading them into believing he would help them build a social network called HarvardConnection.com, while he was instead using their ideas to build a competing product.

The three complained to the Harvard Crimson, and the newspaper began an investigation. The three later filed a lawsuit against Zuckerberg, subsequently settling. In June 2004, Facebook moved its base of operations to Palo Alto, California and received its first investment later that month from PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel. The company dropped “The” from its name after purchasing the domain name facebook.com in 2005 for $200,000.

Writers for The Wall Street Journal found in 2010 that Facebook apps were transmitting identifying information to "dozens of advertising and Internet tracking companies". The apps used an HTTP referrer which exposed the user's identity and sometimes their friends'.

Facebook said, "We have taken immediate action to disable all applications that violate our terms.” Facebook in Privacy Breach, The Wall Street Journal (New York).

In January 2013, the countries with the most Facebook users were:
FB stats by country, March 3, 2012)
United States with 168.8 million members
Brazil with 64.6 million members
India with 62.6 million members
Indonesia with 51.4 million members
Mexico with 40.2 million members This totals to 309 million members or about 38.6 percent of Facebook's 1 billion worldwide members.
43.1 Million Members of Facebook in Indonesia, Kompas, February 2, 2012.

In regards to Facebook's mobile usage, per an analyst report in early 2013, there are 192 million Android users, 147 million iPhone users, 48 million iPad users and 56 million messenger users

Super Bowl 2013 TV ads integrate social media: Ask consumers for their help

"The Super Bowl isn't for kids, I had a great time though and it was worth every nickel of it because by doing this lame piece about the game I can put it on my expense account."
~~ Andy Rooney
, (January 14, 1919 – November 4, 2011) American radio and television writer; Most notable for his weekly broadcast "A Few Minutes with Andy Rooney," and part of the CBS News program 60 Minutes from 1978 to 2011. His final regular appearance on 60 Minutes aired October 2, 2011. He died one month later, on November 4, 2011, at age 92.

With the digital ecosystem (e.g. Twitter, YouTube, Hulu, Facebook, etc.) in constant motion, comes a wealth of options for advertising campaigns. This is becoming more prevalent as more creative advertisements rely on user participation via social media and crowd sourcing.

The decision of whether to release a Super Bowl ad in advance, just have a teaser campaign or hold off altogether until Super Bowl Sunday is what many CMO's consider.

Particularly in light of the fact that the Super Bowl 2012 online audience was 3 times larger than the reported 111 million Super Bowl 2012 TV viewership -- supporting the trend that television audiences are being replaced by the online and mobile audiences and social media's ripple effect spreads information quickly.

Practically all of the Super Bowl 2013 ads have been pre-released online, with the exception of a few who held off and implemented "teaser ads."

Overall, the advertising strategy and theme revolves around user engagement which is why the existing trend of teaser campaigns is slowly but surely being replaced by TV commercials that request consumers help them by casting their vote online through social media.
Besides the obvious increase in exposure, last year roughly 1 and half million consumers viewed Super Bowl 2012 ads on YouTube whereas a total of over 9 million viewed them prior to Super Bowl Sunday. (source: http://tech.fortune.cnn.com/2013/01/30/volkswagen-super-bowl-ad/ also listed in "additional information" below)

From Coke asking consumers to choose their favorite ending and Pepsi asking for fan photos that will appear during the Pepsi Halftime show, to Audi asking viewers to share their brave moments, Doritos® wanting consumers to pick which ad should run on Super Bowl Sunday, and Toyota asking consumers to share their wish on Twitter, it is apparent the cultural movement of sports, particularly the Super Bowl, is progressively shifting towards social media and crowd sourcing.

TV advertisers who do not integrate internet relevancy and social media campaigns stand a great chance of losing leverage and compromising the brand.

Of the seven user participation ads, Audi, Coke and Doritos will show the winning TV ad on Super Bowl Sunday with the help of on consumer votes. Budweiser, with a reputation of having he most original and creative, implemented teaser ads only with no user participation.

A total of seven advertisers, roughly a fifth (or 19%) of the total 36 Super Bowl advertisers included user participation that involved heavy social media and crowd sourcing.

Below is a list of the seven advertisers who implemented social media and user participation in their advertising campaigns:

Audi – Prom Night features 3 videos “Worth It,” “Buddies” and “Tradition. Viewers Share your brave moment, and vote online at and can choose how it should end by picking 1 of the 3 videos. The final spot was announced on Jan. 27 and will air during the Super Bowl.

Coke CokeChase contest – a bus of showgirls, caravan of bad landers and posse of cowboys all on a desert compete for a GIANT bottle of coke. Vote on who you want to win the chase on the CokeChase.com Web site. http://www.cokechase.com/index.html

Doritos Frito Lay – http://www.crashthesuperbowl.com/ “Crash the Superbowl” lists the 5 video finalists on Facebook; to name a few - “Fetch,” “Road Chip,” and “Fashionista Daddy,” on Facebook and asks for your vote.

Lincoln – “The Story Behind the Script” ad Stars NFL Emmitt Smith, the DJ voice only talking to the lady in the car. Curated by Jimmy Fallon (who collected the script ideas). The “SteerTheScript.com” and share road trip experience, took 6 million tweets and Jimmy Fallon picked the ones he liked to create the 30 secon spot for the 3rd, quarter; Viewers can also go see the 90 second version online.

Pepsi, Sponsor of the Halftime show, asks viewers to participate by tweeting what’s happening (ended Jan 11th) at #PepsiHalftime pepsi. The photo submission ended 1/21/13

Pizza Hut's "HUT HUT HUT" commercial wants viewers to believe that the "hut" shouted by quarterbacks at the center actually is for the Hut in Pizza Hut. In return, Pizza Hut salutes quarterbacks in this year's Super Bowl commercial “Thanks for the shout outs,” Now share your best "hut hut hut" at facebook.com/pizzahut.

Toyota, Let’s Go Places #WishGranted Asks viewers to tweet their wish at #wishgranted where Kelly Cuoco will grant some wishes. http://youtu.be/iymBRSUfz9U Embedded video

What do you think? Are the social media and pre-releases of Super Bowl 2013 ads good thing for user engagement or do you prefer to be surprised on Super Bowl Sunday?

There’s still time for some advertisers to participate and to join as an online panelist to rank the Super Bowl with USA Today’s Ad Meter. http://admeter.usatoday.com/

Groundhog Day: Punxsutawney Phil to make 126th prediction

"This is pitiful. A thousand people, freezing their butts off, waiting to worship a rat! What a hype. Well they used to mean something in this town, they used to pull the hog out and they used to eat it. You're hypocrites! All of ya! You got a problem with what I'm saying, Larry? Untie your tongue and you come out here and talk, huh? Am I upsetting you, Princess? You know you want a prediction about the weather, you're asking the wrong Phil. I'll give you a prediction. It's gonna be cold, it's gonna be gray, and it's gonna last you the rest of your life." ~~ Bill Murray , American actor and comedian, as quoted in the 1993 critically acclaimed film "Groundhog Day"

It’s that time of year again, when a funny furry fortune-teller comes out and predicts six more weeks of winter if he casts a shadow – if no shadow, early spring is here.

Occurring every year on February 2nd, dates for the entire celebration begin February 1st - February 3rd, and Punxsy Phil will predict what the next 6 weeks of weather will be.

Amazingly, for over two centuries, (1886 or earlier) crowds as large as 40,000 have gathered at Gobbler's Knob hill at Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to celebrate. Other celebrations taking place in Pennsylvania include Quarryville in Lancaster County, the Anthracite Region of Schuylkill County, and Bucks County.

The largest Groundhog Day celebration is held in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Groundhog Day received more mass attention after the release of the 1993 comedy film “Groundhog Day,” starring Bill Murray who plays Phil Connors, an egotistical Pittsburgh TV weatherman who, during a hated assignment covering the annual Groundhog Day event in Punxsutawney, dreams living February 2nd over and over while repeatedly indulging in hedonism and numerous suicide attempts.

Finally he wakes up and realizes his life matters and prioritizes and makes drastic changes and improvements. In 2006, the film was added to the United States National Film Registry as being deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."

YouTube Video: Groundhog Day - Phil (Bill Murray) Steals Phil (The Groundhog)

Many wonder just how scientific is Punxsy Phil's shadow. According to groundhogday.org, the furry fortune teller is accurate 75% to 90% of the time, while a Canadian study of 13 states has the success rate at 37% and the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) has the overall prediction rate at 39% accurate (since 1987).

The Stormfax Weather Almanac reports Punxsutawney Phil has seen his shadow 100 times, no shadow 16 times with no record 9 times.
Groundhog day in Staten Island is sponsored by Time Warner Cable and garnered with trumpets to wake up the little Staten Island's very own woodchuck, "Chuck," as the Staten Island Zoo opens its gates at 6:30 a.m. on Feb. 2.

Also South Carolina has Sir Walter Wally.

Staten Island Chuck, or Charles G. Hogg as he is known in formal company, will make his prediction at 7:30 a.m. and the ceremony is free.

What do you think? Do you believe in the science or spirit of Groundhog Day?
