Super Bowl XLVII commercial TV ads sold out

“The truth is the Super Bowl long ago became more than just a football game. It's part of our culture like turkey at Thanksgiving and lights at Christmas, and like those holidays beyond their meaning, a factor in our economy.”
~~ Bob Schieffer
, American television journalist who has been with CBS News for 44 years and principal anchor since 1973. Schieffer has a total of 56 years as a reporter and was selected to be inducted into the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Hall of Fame alont with CBS CEO Les Moonves.

This year, the Super Bowl XLVII will be held at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana on Sunday, February 3rd where NFC champion San Francisco 49ers will play the AFC Baltimore Ravens. Super Bowl Sunday is known as the biggest day of the year for TV ads and known as an American cultural phenomenon.

Besides the excitement of the football game and the commercial TV ad spots, CBS 2013 Super Bowl halftime show is the most watched musical event of the year.

This year features 16-time Grammy Award winner and Pepsi spokesperson, Beyonce, who will perform during the Pepsi Super Bowl XLVII halftime show. Will Beyonce “lip sync” or not?

According to a recent The New York Times article, "Super Bowl Commercial Time Is A Sellout," CBS has sold all available commercial time for Super Bowl 2013 with record-breaking prices. Les Moonves, CEO of CBS, has also said that he anticipates raking in more than $225 million in advertising revenue.

So how much do these ads really cost? Ad Age states that the costs have increased slightly from the "casual $3.5 million to an average of $3.7 to $3.8 million." Some spots cost as high as $4 million. This calculates to an average rate of $126,667 per second using the $3.8 million per 30-second spot ad.

A total of six automakers are expected to advertise eight car brands during the game, while six additional companies will advertise eight beverages.

Super Bowl first-time-advertisers include The Lincoln Motor Company (Ford), Soda Stream, The Milk Processor Education Program (i.e., famous for the “Got Milk” print ads), and a few other notables.

Since 1989, the USA Today Super Bowl Ad Meter has been bringing viewers together to rate the commercials on hand-held meters. There’s still time for those interested in participating go to http://www.admeter.usatoday.com.

According to Nielsen, last year, 111 million viewers tuned in to watch the Super Bowl 2012 game, and this year more viewership is expected.

The usual big players, Pepsi and Budweiser (Anheuser Bush) as well as other popular brands Taco Bell, Best Buy (starring Amy Poehler), Century 21 and GoDaddy.com are returning to the game .

Super Bowl 2013 Ads have interactive user experience include Toyota, Pizza Hut, Lincoln, Coke, Audi, Pepsi and Doritos Frito Lay.

Last year NBC reached a record $250 million in total Super Bowl 2012 advertising as reported by The Fiscal Times.

The Wall Street Journal reported last May that General Motors, who has spent $135.2 million from 2002 – 2011, and only 4.7 million for Super Bowl 2012 will not advertise at all in 2013. They will however have pre-game ads.

Here's the iconic, E*Trade Baby ad for Super Bowl 2013:

Doritos® contest included quite a few ads on their Facebook page asking viewers to participate by voting for their best. Here's my pick.

Doritos® also has the Teddybear Prison themed ad “Crash The Super Bowl” is also out on YouTube and this year a public vote will choose one Doritos ad to air during the Super Bowl;

A few advertisers already with ad-teaser campaigns include Coca-Cola who gave up the signature pristine, Polar Bears for a "Mirage" on the desert with Badlanders, Cowboys and Showgirls all racing for a giant bottle of Coke and there's still time to cast your vote.

Mercedes Benz released "Slow Motion Car Wash" teaser ad that stars swimsuit model Kate Upton in a tank top and jeans.

Here's the controversial GoDaddy.com "Perfect Match" ad (Refaeli kissing Nerd)

There is a January 2012 release on YouTube of "The 25 Best Super Bowl Commercials of All Time,” in descending order (25 down to 1 last). Most on the list are repeat advertisers including PepsiCo, Etrade “Babies”, Doritos, FedEx “Caveman," Bud Light, Toyota, etc.

Google celebrates 112th B-Day of Frank Zamboni, inventor of the ice smoothing machine, called 'The Zamboni'

"There are three things in life that people like to stare at: a flowing stream, a crackling fire, and a Zamboni clearing the ice."
~~ Charlie Brown

Zamboni fan, protagonist in the comic strip Peanuts by Charles M. Schulz, as quoted from a 1980 Charles Shultz Charlie Brown Peanus film special "She's a Good Skate, Charlie Brown.”

Google is celebrating the 112th birthday of Frank Zamboni, inventor of the ice-resurfacing machine, with an interactive Google Doodle that is an interactive game where the player must clean the surface of an ice rink using an ice resurfacer.

Happy 112th B-Day to Frank Zamboni born Frank Joseph Zamboni, Jr. (January 16, 1901 – July 27, 1988). Zamboni was an Italian-American inventor, world known for his famous invention, the modern, ice resurfacer, with his surname being registered as a trademark.

Since the early 1950s, the Zamboni has become a cultural phenomenon and holds a very special place for many skaters’ (and non-skaters’) hearts for recreational skating, professional skating, professional ice hockey and other sports but particularly the beauty and magic of turning worn out ice into pristine work of art. Even Charles Schultz, creator of the cartoon characters, Snoopy, along with Charlie Brown and his friends have long been favorites of the Zamboni Company. In 1991 Snoopy was winner of the prestigious World's Top Zamboni Driver award.
Charles Schulz has included Zamboni in 44 of his famous Charlie Brown cartoons. Schulz first included the Zamboni in his famous PEANUTS comic strip in January of 1980.

Snoopy, Charlie Brown, Lucy, Marcie and Peppermint Patty have often commented on the machine with Snoopy and Woodstock becoming two of the most famous Zamboni drivers…in fact, Snoopy's outstanding and unquestioned talent as a Zamboni operator won him the prestigious World's Top Zamboni Driver award in 1991.

Zamboni was born in 1901 in Eureka, Utah to Italian immigrants. His parents soon bought a farm in Lava Hot Springs near Pocatello, Idaho, where he grew up. In 1920, he moved with his parents to the harbor district of Los Angeles, where his older brother George was operating an auto repair shop.

After Frank attended a trade school in Chicago, he and his younger brother Lawrence opened an electrical supply business in 1922 in the Los Angeles suburb of Hynes (now part of Paramount).

The following year he married and eventually had three children. In 1927, he and Lawrence added an ice-making plant and entered the block ice business. They continued their ice business in 1939 but saw little future in that business with the advent of electrically operated refrigeration units. They decided to use their excess refrigeration equipment to open an ice rink nearby.

“Circle the Zambonis.” ~~Snoopy
Winner of the 1991 World's Top Zamboni Driver Award; Answering Charlie Brown's question from Shultz's "Zamboni Machine Comic Series"
In 1940, he and his brothers, along with a cousin, opened Iceland rink, which became very popular, particularly because Frank had devised a way to eliminate rippling caused by the pipes that were laid down to keep the rink frozen. (The rink still operates and is still owned by the Zamboni family.)

He obtained a patent for that innovation in 1946 and then in 1949 he invented a machine that transformed the job of resurfacing an ice rink from a three-man, 90-minute task to a one-man, 10-minute job. He applied for a patent that same year and set up Frank J. Zamboni & Co. in Paramount to build and sell the machines.

He obtained his patent in 1953. In the early 1950s he built them on top of Jeep CJ-3Bs, then on stripped Jeep chassis from 1956 through 1964. Demand for the machine proved great enough that his company added a second plant in Brantford, Ontario and a branch office in Switzerland.

Though the term Zamboni was (and remains) trademarked by his company, the name is sometimes improperly used for any brand of ice resurfacing machine.

Seth MacFarlane and Emma Stone announce 2013 Oscar nominations: ‘Lincoln’ tops the list with 12 nominations

“You ladies never have to pretend to be attracted to Harry Weinstein again.” ~~ Seth MacFarlane
American actor, comedian, producer, director, and singer, quoted during Oscar 2013 announcements (January 10, 2013)

Seth MacFarlane and Emma Stone announced Oscar nominations for the 2013 Academy Awards on Thursday morning, January 10th at 5:38 a.m. Pacific Time.

Amazingly, all 5 best actor nominees have won Oscars before. Also worth mentioning is that best actress nominee, Jennifer Lawrence, "Silver Linings Playbook," is the youngest actress to have 2 Oscar nominations by age 22. Silver Linings is the only movie to have all 4 acting category nominations – the last time this milestone was reached was 39 years ago from the film "Reds" in 1981.

"Lincoln" received the most Oscar nominations including best director category, and this film will most likely win “best picture” as it is very difficult for a film to receive that without also receiving a nomination for best director, and this epic film leads the pack with 12 nominations.

A few surprises were that past film director Oscar winners, Catherine Bigelow, "Zero Dark Thirty," Ben Affleck for “Argo,” and Tom Hooper for “Les Miserables,” did not receive best director nominations.

Also, Affleck did not get nominated in the “Best Actor” category. No director nomination for Quentin Tarantino for "Django Unchanged;" however, this controversial movie did receive nominations for best picture and original screenplay.

Silver Linings Playbook received nominations for just about every popular category. Quvenshane' Wallis for Beast of the Southern Wild is the youngest actress at 9 years young (and only 6 at the time of filming), to receive an Oscar nomination for best actress. The oldest Oscar nominee is Emmanuelle Riva for Amour who will be 86 years old on Oscar night.

The Oscars are voted on by members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. More information on the voting process is available at the Academy's website.

The Golden Globes will take place Sunday, January 13th and is voted by the Hollywood Foreign Press.

Oscar night this year will be Sunday, February 24th. For FULL COVERAGE: The 85th Annual Academy Awards visit the “Oscar Nominee.” Website.

Many notable correspondents and critics were disappointed that Catherine Bigelow, Ben Affleck, and Tom Hooper did not receive nominations for best director. What do you think? Should the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences do a recall for this category?

Family and friends celebrate centennial birthday gala of President Richard Nixon's 100th birthday, January 9, 2013

“Life isn't meant to be easy. It's hard to take being on the top - or on the bottom. I guess I'm something of a fatalist. You have to have a sense of history, I think, to survive some of these things... Life is one crisis after another.”
~~ President Richard Nixon

(January 9, 1913 – April 22, 1994) The 37th President of the United States, serving from 1969 to 1974

Happy 100th B-Day to Richard Nixon, the 37th President of the United States, serving from 1969 to 1974, when he became the only president to resign the office. Nixon had previously served as a Republican U.S. representative and senator from California and as the 36th Vice President of the United States from 1953 to 1961. Kickoff celebration began today (Sunday, January 6th) at his boyhood home in Yorba Linda, CA.
Born to Francis A. Nixon and Hannah (Milhous) Nixon on January 9, 1913, in a house his father built in Yorba Linda, California. Nixon had four brothers: Harold (1909–33), Donald (1914–87), Arthur (1918–25), and Edward (born 1930). Four of the five Nixon boys were named after kings who had ruled in historical or legendary England; Richard, for example, was named after Richard the Lionheart.

Nixon graduated from Whittier College in 1934 and Duke University School of Law in 1937, returning to California to practice law. He and his wife, Pat Nixon, moved to Washington to work for the federal government in 1942.

“We were poor, but the glory of it was, we didn't know it.” ~~ President Richard Nixon
Nixon quoted a saying of Eisenhower to describe his boyhood and early life hardship

He subsequently served in the United States Navy during World War II. Nixon was elected in California to the House of Representatives in 1946 and to the Senate in 1950. His pursuit of the Alger Hiss case established his reputation as a leading anti-communist, and elevated him to national prominence. He was the running mate of Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Republican Party presidential nominee in the 1952 election.

Nixon served for eight years as vice president and waged an unsuccessful presidential campaign in 1960, losing to John F. Kennedy by a narrow margin.

Photo left: President Nixon with his family at Airport - Richard and Pat Nixon introduce General Dwight D. Eisenhower—Richard Nixon's running mate—to their daughters Tricia (standing) and Julie (carried by her father), Washington National Airport, September 10, 1952.

Although there was much controversy especially during the height of Watergate, the legacy of Nixon will be his foreign relations particularly with China (1971 – 1972) – Nixon’s amazing brilliance coaxed China out of the Cold War, initiated détente and the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty with Soviet Union, and he also brought our troops out of VietNam.

Nixon’s actions were very similar to what appears to be going on in the United States today with Afghanistan, Iran and North VietNam. So the saying goes "history repeats itself," and political histories do the same. This is an excellent example of how we can learn from lessons of the past.

Domestically, his administration generally embraced policies that transferred power from Washington to the states.

Among other things, he initiated initiatives to fight cancer and illegal drugs, imposed wage and price controls, enforced desegregation of some Southern schools, and established the Environmental Protection Agency.

Though he presided over the lunar landings beginning with Apollo 11, he scaled back manned space exploration. He was re-elected by a landslide in 1972.

Today, January 9, 2013 would have been Nixon’s 100th birthday, and many who worked with him will be celebrating his life on his centennial celebration at the Yorba Linda Library in Yorba Linda, California.

Also a pre-celebration of the Nixon Centennial kicked off today (Sunday, January 6th at 11 a.m. PT) at his boyhood home in Yorba Linda, CA.

Happy B-Day Doris Kearns Goodwin: Hoorah you've reached the big 070

“When I got married and had my kids I was at that time still teaching. I realized I couldn’t be a professor and write and be a mother at the same time. So I decided to give up being a professor even though that was my identity for over 10 years. I decided to take a risk to write and that turned out being the right decision. But it really meant that I could write and be with the kids.”
~~ Doris Kearns Goodwin Pulitzer Prize-winning American biographer, acclaimed historian and renown political commentator; As quoted on April 19, 2010 while answering the allthingsdigitalmarketing.com question of the day at The 40th Annual Matrix Awards 2010 in New York City -- "What was the most important decision you have ever made and why?"

Happy B-Day to Doris Kearns Goodwin, Pulitzer Prize-winning American biographer, acclaimed historian, and popular political commentator. She has written biographies of several U.S. Presidents, including Lyndon Johnson and the American Dream; The Fitzgeralds and the Kennedys: An American Saga; No Ordinary Time: Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt (which won the Pulitzer Prize for History in 1995); and her most recent book, Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of Helen Witt (née Miller) and Michael Francis Aloysius Kearns, Kearns grew up in Rockville Centre, New York. She attended Colby College in Maine, where she was a member of Tri Delta and Phi Beta Kappa and graduated magna cum laude in 1964 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She was awarded a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship in 1964 to pursue doctoral studies. In 1968 she earned a Ph.D. in government from Harvard University, with a thesis entitled "Prayer and Reapportionment: an Analysis of the Relationship between the Congress and the Court.”

In 1967, during the Lyndon B. Johnson administration, Kearns went to Washington, D.C., as a White House Fellow. Johnson offered Kearns a job as his assistant, even after an article by Kearns appeared in The New Republic laying out a scenario for Johnson's removal from office over his conduct of the war in Vietnam, the offer was not withdrawn.

After Johnson left office in 1969, Kearns taught government at Harvard for ten years, including a course on the American presidency. During this period she also assisted Johnson in drafting his memoirs. Her first book, Lyndon Johnson and the American Dream, which drew upon her conversations with the late president, was published in 1977. It became a New York Times bestseller and provided a launching pad for her literary career.

Interesting trivia about Goodwin was that sometime in 1993 - 1994 she became the first female journalist to enter the Boston Red Sox locker room. She consulted on and appeared in Ken Burns's 1994 documentary, Baseball.

Goodwin won the Pulitzer Prize in 1995 for No Ordinary Time: Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt: The American Homefront During World War II.

Goodwin is currently working on her next book which will be about Theodore Roosevelt, focusing on his relationship with William Howard Taft, the election of 1912 and the muckraking journalism of the Progressive era.

Stephen King met with Goodwin while he was writing his novel 11/22/63, due to her being an assistant to Johnson, and King used some of her ideas in the novel on what a worst-case scenario would be like if history had changed.
