What's your New Year reSEOlution? Top pick reSEOlutions tips for 2014; 'Evergreen marketing insighter' ▲▲▲by Gloria Buono-Daly

“The success of a page should be measured by one criteria: Does the visitor do what you want them to do?”
~~Aaron Wall – SEObook.com

You’ve tried several years before but this time, come January 1, your New Year reSEOlution © is to be more SEOrganized © , pay more attention to the detail, save on SEM spending and track those milestones once and for all.

You’ve been ready since it became popular in 2007 but are so busy that you get off track and end up putting it back in the proverbial rainy-day pile for next quarter. Hundreds of rainy days later and you have no idea what your SEO program is let alone the basic concept of relevant keywording, linkbuilding and the latest, MOBILE tail end phrases.

There are probably hundreds to thousands of FREE SEO tips you can incorporate into your internet marketing program. I’ve listed below key tips to help jump-start your 2014 New Year reSEOlution. Along the way, I’ve included a few helpful URLs that will provide you with many more SEO tips to choose from.

1. Review your SEO stats for the past 3 years, if possible, and analyze and incorporate SEO strategies and plans accordingly; Make sure your existing marketing program is enhanced with MOBILE campaigns and consider the mindset logic for mobile is different than laptop/desktop

2. Create a spreadsheet of your SEO program and include timelines, milestones and all the other relevant items. Make sure you update and review this sheet on a daily to weekly basis and adjust your SEO strategy accordingly; Don’t forget to add MOBILE CAMPAIGNS and leave plenty of space to add on to as you move down this list

3. Optimize your web site for MOBILE webpages and get them ranked in SERP by cross linking to respective webpage – user agents for search and bots should go to the same webpage version. Create a map. Make sure web and mobile have consistent (vertically oriented) navigation especially since MOBILE devices have touchscreens. I’m amazed at how many web sites are not optimizing their site maps; Yes you’ve had a site map since the web site was first created but is it optimized to include relevant keyword descriptions, etc?

4. Incorporate keywords in your anchor text; this can take a very long time to determine and complete depending on how many links are on your web site. You may want to segment and delegate this to several on your team and schedule updates on a regular basis. Depending on your product or service, keywords may need to be revised regularly.

5. Update meta tag descriptions regularly, and make sure the characters do not exceed 200 (including spaces); Meta tag description is the snippet that is included with your organic search listing. The more creative and appealing your copy with relevant keywords that match your web site the better chances you have of being indexed more prominently

6. Review title tags and make sure you use 3 to 4 relevant keywords, repeating them each at least 2X but no more than 3X; Characters should not exceed 150 (including spaces) For example, a jewelry site might have the following title: "AnnHarringtonJewelry.com, discount diamond rings, diamond jewelry, diamond engagement rings, antique jewelry, modern jewelry" – note the web site URL address is 1st, then followed by the use of keywords "diamond" used 3X, "rings" used 2X, and "jewelry" used 3X, all relevant to this web site; All following the SEO industry standard as mentioned in this section (see 1st sentence).

7. Maximize the social networks, e.g., Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. Equally important is to repeat your posts (e.g., Hoot Suite for repeating Tweets). For more ideas visit these resourceful sites that have plenty of suggestions - seobook.com, searchengineland.com and moz.org (formerly seomoz.org)

8. There is no room for "writer's block" when it comes to blogging. Good web content is more important now than ever before. Make sure to blog regularly and here is a great resource for helping new and experienced bloggers written by David Moth of econsultancy.com titled 14 places to look for blogging inspiration when writer's block strikes.

9. If you have many images, make sure you are incorporating image tags into your code otherwise you risk spiders and crawlers ignoring your site

10. Review meta tag keywords and make sure a comma is after each keyword and that the max is no more than 250 characters (including spaces); This is a common error that is overlooked, however, this can make or break you organic positioning. Make sure you incorporate end phrases for your mobile campaigns

11. Submit your site to reputable search engines such as Yahoo, DMOZ, Aviva, Business.com, etc.

Remember your 2014 new year reSEOlution program is a WIP (work in progress) and the more regularly you review, update and add to your existing SEO program, the more impact your SEO will have to your bottom line.

Wishing you and yours a healthy and prosperous 2014!

Is the world of digital making you stressed and lonely during Christmas and throughout the year? ▲ ▲ ▲
'evergreen marketing insighter' by Gloria Buono-Daly

“Christmas is doing a little something extra for someone.”
~~
Charles M. Schulz
(November 26, 1922 – February 12, 2000), aka “Sparky,” American cartoonist, best known for the comic strip Peanuts featuring characters Snoopy and Charlie Brown, Lucy, etc.

Is the world of digital negatively impacting the way people interact with others, i.e., social media Facebook?

The saying every story has two sides also applies to research studies.

According to a study from University of Michigan’s psychologist Ethan Kross, Facebook and other social media are contributing to loneliness and reducing overall life satisfaction.

Research also concluded that technology continues having negative effects on the way people interact with others and the way they perceive others. More information at All the lonely Facebook friends: Study shows social media makes us MORE lonely and unhappy and LESS sociable

The other side of the story

While many believe that the dynamics of becoming excessively engaged on the internet, ipad, texting, gaming, iphones, etc. can create mixed feelings, stress and breed loneliness and depression, there is also research that concludes opposite.

Circle Adventist, a non profit organization, reported findings from a socio-psychological study of undergraduate students that the Internet does not seem to influence loneliness levels in undergraduate students.

The study concluded that newer users of the internet are at higher risks of experiencing loneliness and that loneliness is more prevalent among undergrad students who use the internet for more than 40 hours per week and choose this form of communication over personal face-to-face and telephone conversations.

More information at Circle Adventist article titled “A study of the relationship between loneliness and Internet use among university students.”

What do you think? Is technology and the world of digital negatively impacting your social life? How frequently do you use Facebook?

Twelve more days until Christmas: Merry Christmas America ... Happy New Year too! Enjoy my favorite chocolate mousse recipe

"...When we recall Christmas past, we usually find that the simplest things -- not the great occasions -- give off the greatest glow of happiness..."
~~ Bob Hope

(May 29, 1903 – July 27, 2003)English-born American comedian and actor on Broadway, in vaudeville, movies, television, and radio.

Like many households during Christmas season, in the center of our table you will find all sorts of desserts --cookies, cakes, Italian pastries, etc. During this 12 days before Christmas, have fun decorating, baking and partying with family and friends.

Every once in a while, I would bring that favorite, rich treat -- dark, decadent chocolate mousse. What makes mousse so unique is the light and airy texture from air bubbles.

Depending on preparation and mix intensity mousse variations range from light and fluffy to creamy and thick and can be sweet, bitter or savory. The great thing about this dessert is the prep time is only six minutes and then all you need do is refrigerate it for an hour.

INGREDIENTS:
[Use numbers in parentheses for larger quantity servings
► 1 (4) teaspoon unflavored gelatin
► 1 (4) tablespoon cold water
► 2 (8) tablespoons boiling water
► 1/2 (4) cup sugar (can substitute with splenda, equal, etc.)
► 1/4 (1) cup cocoa (AT LEAST 60% cocoa concentration for best flavor)
► 1 (4) cup whipping cream (can substitute w yogurt but texture will change
► 1 (4) teaspoon vanilla extract
► chocolate curls

OPTIONAL:
► 2 tablespoons of instant espresso
► Be imaginative. Try something different and share it by commenting on this blog
► I've tried with the usual raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, but also tried cinnamon sticks, walnuts, cranberries, etc.

Step 1 : Gelatin mixture (3 min)
► In a small bowl sprinkle unflavored gelatin over the cold water; let stand 1 minute
►Add the boiling water, stirring, until gelatin is dissolved.

Step 2 : Mousse (3 min)
► In a separate bowl combine the sugar, cocoa, whipping cream, and vanilla; stir to blend
► Beat on medium speed of electric mixer, scraping the bottom of the bowl a few times, until the mixture is stiff
► Add the gelatin mixture and beat until well blended.

Step 3 : Spoon in dish and chill (60 min)
► Spoon the chocolate mousse into dessert dishes or glasses
► Sprinkle mousse with chocolate curls, if desired
►Chill for at least 1 hour before serving makes eight 6oz servings (parenthesis numbers make up to 32 6oz servings

Total time - 1 Hour and 6 Minutes

Happy 178th to Mark Twain, author of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

“Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great!”
~~ Samuel Langhorne Clemens, pen name Mark Twain,
American humorist and author of “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” (1876) and sequel, “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” (1885) (b. November 30, 1835– d. April 21, 1910) ; known as the “Father of Literature.”

Would you believe the author of “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” known as the “Greatest American Novel” of all time was born 178 years ago today? And would you believe that his advice on family and public etiquette as well as inspiring wit and wisdom from greatness, getting things done, and morals, to dress, health, food, and childrearing, etc., are forever relevant. Twain, perhaps the greatest, genius storyteller put himself in everything he did.
Image above courtesy of Wikimedia.org.

Born Samuel Clemens Langhorne in Florida, Missouri, on November 30, 1835, to Jane (née Lampton; 1803–1890), a native of Kentucky, and John Marshall Clemens (1798–1847), a Virginian by birth. Twain was born two weeks after the closest approach to Earth of Halley's Comet and when he was 74 years old (1909) Twain was quoted saying:

"I came in with Halley's Comet in 1835. It is coming again next year, and I expect to go out with it. It will be the greatest disappointment of my life if I don't go out with Halley's Comet …"

Intriguing that Twain would die of heart attack one day after the comet's closest approach to Earth on April 21, 1910, at his home in Redding, Connecticut.

Interesting that although Twain earned a great deal of money from his writings and lectures, he lost a great deal of money in investments. He filed for bankruptcy, and with the help of Henry Huttleston Rogers, principal of Standard Oil, gradually resolved his financial issues.

Twain’s first great success as a writer, was in 1865 when he wrote a short story "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" which brought him national attention.

There is speculation about his pen name. Before deciding on his pen name "'Mark Twain" he used different ones – “Josh" until 1863 and pen name "Thomas Jefferson Snodgrass" for a series of humorous letters. Twain stated that his famous pen name of Mark Twain was not only his idea but also from a captain who used the name “MARK TWAIN” the call made regarding safer condition of the Mississippi River– two fathoms (12 feet or 3.7 metres), as written in his book “Life on the Mississippi.”

However biographer George Williams III claims that he used “mark twain” in reference to a running bar tab that he frequently incurred while drinking at John Piper's saloon in Virginia City, Nevada.

Friend and future Twain biographer Albert Bigelow Paine reported shortly after Twain’s death at his home in Redding, Connecticut that although doctors listed his death as “angina pectoris,” he died of a broken heart.

Despite Twain’s successes, his life was filled with tremendous sorrows – the loss of his only son at 2 years old, Langdon (1870 – 1872), a daughter in her early 20s, Suzy (1896 at 24 years old), another at 29 years old, Jean (in 1909), his wife Olivia of 34 years (1904 at 59 years old).

His surviving daughter, contralto concert singer, Clara (2nd born of Twain’s 3 daughters), was by his side during his death.

Happy Thanksgiving, Happy Hanukkah, and Happy Thanksgivukkah America!

"My cooking is so bad my kids thought Thanksgiving was to commemorate Pearl Harbor."
~~ Phyllis Diller, American stand-up comedienne, actress, voice artist, and comedienne, best known for her eccentric stage persona and her wild hair and clothes.(b. July 17, 1917 – d. August 20, 2012)

Just when you think you've got all the bases covered for Thanksgiving -- turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, decorations, etc., another unusual, unexpected, once in a lifetime happening happens and sheds a whole new light, 8 lights to be exact, on Thanksgiving.

To think the purest, American holiday is colliding with the Jewish religious 8 day of lights -- it's been 125 years (1888) since Thanksgiving and Hanukkah fell on the exact day. And this hybrid holiday won't be happenning again until another 80 millennia (that's right 79,000 years later)!
Thanksgivukkah Menurkie photo above right from Lori Feldman blog, A Year in Photos - Year 5: Thanksgivukkah Menurkies"
The “once-in-a-lifetime” holiday is being marked by Jews across America by decorating their homes with turkey menorahs, known as menurkies, and dreidels decorated with birds, known as turkels.

What will you be doing this Thanksgiving Day (Thanksgivukkah).

If you plan on being in New York City, there's always the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, this is the 87th year.

For those of you who will be going it alone, you are not alone -- there are plenty of folks who are thankful for what they've got but still say "no thank you" to celebrating with their families.

There are plenty of things to do on Thanksgiving for those going solo -- see links below in the "Resources" section.

Thanksgiving Day (Jour de l'Action de grâce in Canadian French) is a national holiday celebrated primarily in the United States and Canada as a day of giving thanks for the blessing of the harvest and of the preceding year.

Several other places around the world observe similar celebrations.

It is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States and on the second Monday of October in Canada. Thanksgiving has its historical roots in religious and cultural traditions, and has long been celebrated in a secular manner as well.

Hanukkah (/ˈhɑːnəkə/ HAH-nə-kə; Hebrew: חֲנֻכָּה, Tiberian: Ḥănukkāh, usually spelled חנוכה, pronounced /χanuˈka/ in Modern Hebrew; a transliteration also romanized as Chanukah, Chanukkah or [Chanuˈkah]), also known as the Festival of Lights and Feast of Dedication, is an eight-day Jewish holiday commemorating the rededication of the Holy Temple (the Second Temple) in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean Revolt against the Seleucid Empire of the 2nd century BCE. Hanukkah is observed for eight nights and days, starting on the 25th day of Kislev according to the Hebrew calendar, which may occur at any time from late November to late December in the Gregorian calendar.
This blog would not stand to it's allthingsdigitalmarketing motif without a collage of Thanksgiving Google Doodles past. Here is a collage of the lovely Thanksgiving Doodles past. Of course, as soon as the 2013 Google Doodle is live, I will add it here.

As promised, the 2013 Thanksgiving Day doodle (see below opening and closing snapshots) is an adorable animated forest animal collage setting, with pumpkins, trees, foxes, turkey, chipmunks, birds, banjo player, etc. all joining in to celebrate Thanksgiving festivities.

BESIDES THE IDEA I POSTED HERE'S SOME ADDITIONAL INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT PIZZA

According to Wikimedia.org, the word pizza (Italian pronunciation: [ˈpittsa], from the Latin verb pìnsere, to press and from the Greek pēktos, πηκτός, meaning "solid" or "clotted") is Greek in origin. The ancient Greeks covered their bread with oils, herbs and cheese. In Byzantine Greek, the word was spelled πίτα, pita, or πίττα, pitta, meaning pie. The word has also spread to Romanian as pită, Turkish as pide, and Bulgarian, Bosnian, Croatian, Macedonian and Serbian as pita, Albanian as pite and Modern Hebrew pittāh.

The Romans developed placenta, a sheet of dough topped with cheese and honey and flavored with bay leaves. Modern pizza originated in Italy as the Neapolitan flatbread.
A popular urban legend holds that the archetypal pizza, Pizza Margherita, was invented in 1889, when the Royal Palace of Capodimonte commissioned the Neapolitan pizzaiolo Raffaele Esposito to create a pizza in honor of the visiting Queen Margherita. Of the three different pizzas he created, the Queen strongly preferred a pie swathed in the colors of the Italian flag: red (tomato), green (basil), and white (mozzarella). Supposedly, this kind of pizza was then named after the Queen as Pizza Margherita,[4] though recent research casts doubt on this legend. (Photo right courtesy of Wikimedia.org)

This year, three of these companies are being honored for the second consecutive year, with another eleven being honored for the very first time. All of these companies are true pioneers and are very courageous to have stepped forward. But they know that by supporting all employees, everybody benefits, regardless of sexual orientation. It's all about attracting and retaining the best talent, and it is our hope that other companies will follow suit."

America's most popular cartoon character turns 85 on November 18th, 2012 - Happy Birthday Mickey Mouse

"I only hope that we never lose sight of one thing – that it was all started by a mouse."
~~ Walt Disney

(December 5, 1901 – December 15, 1966) as said at Disneyland, October 27, 1954

The world's most popular cartoon character, Mickey Mouse, also Disney’s mascot, turns 85 years old today. Did you know that Mickey Mouse is a native New Yorker? Mickey was born in New York City with the release of “Steamboat Willie,” an animated short film directed by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks.

Steamboat Willie premiered at Universal's Colony Theater in New York City on November 18, 1928. The original voice of Mickey was done by Walt Disney. The film was distributed by Celebrity Productions and its initial run lasted two weeks. Mickey’s girlfriend, Minnie, also debuted in the film.

Three days after it’s release, Variety magazine raved about the film, the review included “Not the first animated cartoon to be synchronized with sound effects, but the first to attract favorable attention. [Steamboat Willie] represents a high order of cartoon ingenuity, cleverly combined with sound effects. The union brought laughs galore. Giggles came so fast at the Colony [Theater] they were stumbling over each other."

Mickey has met with practically every U.S. President since Harry Truman through George W. Bush and even Barack Obama, with the exception of Lyndon B. Johnson. As the official Walt Disney mascot, Mickey has played a role in the Disney parks since the opening of Disneyland in 1955.

Besides many animated film features, Mickey was most famously featured on wrist watches and alarm clocks. The first Mickey Mouse watches were manufactured in 1933 by the Ingersoll Watch Company. The seconds were indicated by a turning disk below Mickey. The first Mickey watch sold at the Century of Progress in Chicago, 1933 for $3.75.

Mickey Mouse has received nine nominations for the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film. These are Mickey's Orphans (1931), Building a Building (1933), Brave Little Tailor (1938), The Pointer (1939), Lend a Paw (1941), Squatter's Rights (1946), Mickey and the Seal (1948), Mickey's Christmas Carol (1983), and Runaway Brain (1995).

On November 18, 1978, in honor of Mickey’s 50th anniversary, Mickey became the first cartoon character to have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The star is located on 6925 Hollywood Blvd.

Among these, Lend a Paw was the only film to actually win the award. Additionally, in 1932 Walt Disney received an honorary Academy Award in recognition of Mickey's creation and popularity.

In 1994, four of Mickey's cartoons were included in the book The 50 Greatest Cartoons which listed the greatest cartoons of all time as voted by members of the animation field. The films were The Band Concert (#3), Steamboat Willie (#13), Brave Little Tailor (#26), and Clock Cleaners (#27).

The Women’s Media Center – founded by Jane Fonda, Robin Morgan and Gloria Steinem – works to make women and girls visible and powerful in the media. The influence of the media is the most powerful economic and cultural force today. By deciding who gets to talk, what shapes the debate, who writes and what is important enough to report, the media shapes our understanding of who we are and what we do.
