SES New York 2013 Conference & Expo: DAY 1 intrigues and inspires

Professionals in all walks of marketing, social media, PR, publishing, advertising and IT gathered at the Hilton Marriot Marquis in NYC for an information-packed "DAY 1" of SES New York 2013 Conference and Expo.

There was plenty of networking opportunities inbetween choices of 3 out of the 15 session offerings that ranged from SEO Diagnostics and Social Media to Enterprise Search and Convergence Analytics.

The event opened with an interesting and topical "Conference Welcome and Opening Keynote" titled "Social TV: How Marketers Can Reach and Engage Audiences by Connecting Television to the Web, Social Media and Mobile" with keynote speaker, Mike Proulx. Proulx, Senior Vice President and Director of Social Media at Hill Holiday who also authored the book "Social TV:" shared his insights and tips on leveraging social TV and other market related topics.

A great "DAY 1" intrigued and inspired many top marketers and gave me the opportunity to meet and interview Matthew Roberts, Co-Founder of Linkdex, the innovative data and technology app that optimizes SEO, PR, content marketing and social campaigns.

Roberts described his innovative enterprise tool which integrates various information from various marketing matrixes -- i.e., search, social, content and PR -- making it all go to work effectively and efficiently, and all in one place.

Otherwise tedious tasks and complex procedures will not only be simplified, but integrated, taking many aspects of marketing, social and PR to a much higher level. Roberts also discussed the importance of "network visualization" and why marketers including public relations professionals, will need to incorporate "network visualization" into their campaigns and programs.

Stay tuned for the "One to One" video with Matthew Roberts is posted below. Bookmark this blog and visit frequently.

Twitter reaches the BIG 007 today! Happy Tweet-Day to you!

Happy 7th B-Day Twitter.

Still no definitive business model or $ profit yet Twitter continues to spread wings, ripple effects and much intrigue! Wishing you many more twitterers, tweets and TweetDays!

According to Stan Schroeder, writer of Mashable, Twitter's B-Day is today -- last year I was wrong, I thought it was March 22nd. His article from Twitter's 6th, Happy 6th Birthday, Twitter!

Twitter hasn't changed much with the exception of it's phenomenal growth. According to many resources including Mashable and SocialMedia, Twitter has about 200 million accounts and averages 400M tweets per day. Below is a blog from 2009 all about Twitter:

Twitter, a micro-blog with a 140-character-limit blurb known as a “tweet” having potential to create a chain of social media networking events that can lead to exponentially larger alterations of social media networking instances. Twittering appears to have maximized the power of connecting. In less than 4 years, it is  estimated that there are over 250 million twitter accounts worldwide.

But if you think that Twitter and the bird’s far reaching effect is enough to make your media campaign a success, try spreading your wings and flying. You just might find yourself in a nose-dive!

Of course, everyone is twittering, with hopes of creating shifts in perspectives that will lead to greater connections, better businesses and stronger communities.

It’s been said that a sea gull’s simple flap of a wing can change weather, and so too a simple tweet can create ripple effects in the customers, employees, friends, colleagues and even those people and entities that you have never known and now suddenly have become your followers.

Why then are there still no analytics for measuring effectiveness, or tried and true processes and marketing solutions from this bird?

Although Twitter’s wide massive appeal has grown so quickly in such a brief time, it is still considered new. Twitter became available to the public in 2006 but really gained momentum in April 2007. According to Wikipedia “The tipping point for Twitter's popularity was the 2007 South by Southwest, SXSW, festival. During the event usage went from 20,000 tweets per day to 60,000.” This all occurring after the Web 2.0 buzz of 2006, which arose 2 years after the first Web 2.0 Oreilly Conference, October 5 – 7, 2004, at the Hotel Nikko in San Francisco, CA.

Today, there are many factors that contribute to the success of a social networking marketing campaign and Twitter is just one of the many digital integrated marketing tools. Besides having experience, skill and passion about what you are communicating, successful social media marketing requires a well thought out, detailed, marketing plan and timeline. Even with all this, there are still no guarantees; What works for one company or person  may not be as effective for another.

While there are no magic bullets that will guarantee the overall success of your campaign, below you will find a listing of some helpful tips to guide you through the process of integrating twittering into your corporate digital marketing programs:

1. Create momentum with effective communications and set up kick-off meetings well in advance of your deliverables

2. Optimal participation is key. Schedule regular (weekly or bi-weekly) meetings (virtual or in person) and involve as many employees/departments in your organization.

3. Ensure that your meeting handouts include guidelines for branding specs, e.g., having company logo included on all tweets, regardless of whether a company is using different blog/tweet names for different products,/themes, etc., appropriate tone, buzzwords, keywords, etc.

4. If your social marketing media campaign calls for multiple bloggers and twitterers, make sure your respective tweet names match respective tweet blogs; This information should all be mapped out (e.g., spreadsheet) and incorporated into your digital marketing plan alongside all of the other marketing tools you will be integrating

5. Use common sense and discuss best practice to ensure employee tweeters know their leaps and bounds when contributing to avoid compromising your blogs/tweets integrity and reputation

6. Tie in tweets with your company’s blogs – an example is how Martha Stewart’s tips, ideas, etc., from her blog into tweets – again, not necessarily coming from someone from her company, but created such a brand following that followers as well as employees include her ideas in their blogs

7. Understand and learn of the importance of following potential customers, existing customers, vendors, suppliers, etc.

8. Incorporate short and simple auto-respond tweets for new followers – assuring real-time reply in the event no one is able to respond immediately; Although the majority of folks recommend not using auto-responds, my suggestion is to test the waters but keep auto-responds short, thanking them for connecting and sharing relevant information.  If you feel auto-responding is working against you, simply remove it. At least you can say you gave it a try.

9. Understand the importance of hashtags and other application enhancements and use them carefully. E.g., including hashtags in your tweets, e.g., #followfriday; and applications, Tweet Meme, etc. There are pros and cons to hashtags - some folks feel the short 140-character blurbs get distorted from the #hashtag symbol while others are embracing it. So far, I haven't been incorporating hashtags into my tweets. I plan on giving #hashtags a try soon.

Happy Saint Patrick's Day! Try My Irish Soda Bread Easy 1-2-3 Recipe

"A best friend is like a four leaf clover : hard to find and lucky to have!"
~~ Anonymous Irish Quote

Slàinte
(pronounced: slawncha, like "lawn-chair" but with an "s" in front of it, is how one would say Cheers in Irish Gaelic)
My favorite Irish soda bread, as posted every year. Enjoy!

Happy Saint Pat's Day!
This year it's Sunday, March 17th! With many being bit by the leprechaun earlier in time for the many parades through the country beginning today. The oldest and largest of the St. Paddy’s Day parades in the Western Hemisphere, dating back to 1762 -- New York City's St. Paddy's Day Parade -- steps off at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 16. Like many households on Saint Patrick's Day, in the center of our breakfast table you will find tasty, Irish, soda bread to celebrate the luck and charm of the Irish. I baked this easy Irish soda bread earlier today and just had to share my easy recipe by posting on my blogs. The great thing about this is the prep time was slightly less than 5 minutes and it baked in an hour.
INGREDIENTS:
► Flour 3 1/2 cups
► Sugar 3/4 to 1 cup (or try sugarfree alternatives; e.g., splenda or equal)
► Baking powder 1 tablespoon
► Eggs 2 medium size
► Milk 1 cup
► Melted butter - 1 stick
OPTIONAL:
► Raisins 1 cup
► Caraway seeds 2 tablespoons
► Be imaginative. I used Flax Seeds

Step 1 : Soda Bread Dough (3 min)
► Prepare oven at 375°; In large bowl combine dry ingredients
► Flour
► Sugar
► Baking Powder
► Optional ingredients - I added 1/2 teaspoon Flax seeds
► Add remaining ingredients - Milk, Eggs, Melted Butter

Step 2 : Knead Dough (2 min)
► Knead dough and divide the dough into 2 round loaves
► Sprinkle flour if dough is too moist and sticky
► Using a cake knife, mark the top of each dough loaf with an X

Step 3 : Place loaves in 375° oven (60 min)
► Wait at least 10 minutes before slicing

Total time - 1 Hour and 5 Minutes

“Every man desires to live long, but no man wishes to be old.”
--Jonathan Swift (1667-1745), Irish author and satirist.

SES 2013 New York Conference: Facebook Graph Search event preview

The annual SES 2013 New York Conference is where marketing and advertising professionals get the most exciting and interesting opportunities. Besides networking with top notch experts, learning the latest trends and insights from the finest industry leaders in search and technology is second to none.

Here's another market-worthy preview of a very relevant and topical social media trend -- Facebook Graph Search, and potential repercussions on privacy.

SPOTLIGHT SESSION: Facebook Graph Search and its Impact on Reputation Management, Privacy, Local Search and More, scheduled for Thursday, March 28, Day 3, from 2:15 p.m. – 3:15 p.m. Attendees will learn the nuts and bolts and hear some of the findings from hundreds of Graph Searches - findings that could impact users, SEO's, parents, marketers, local businesses, and more. The goal of this session is to base the content on actual use versus opinion or theory, relevant topics including privacy concerns, online reputation management, local graph search and much more.

Here’s a preview of the quality and topical insights from featured guest speaker, Glenn Gabe, President, G-Squared Interactive (Photo above left, Glenn Gabe).

Q. What does it mean to you to be a part of the leading industry event, SES New York 2013 Conference? How does it make you feel to be invited as speaker?

A. It really means a lot to me. I feel it’s an honor to be a presenter at SES NY. During my career, I’ve always thought SES NY was one of the top conferences in the industry. Every time I have attended, I’ve had the ability to learn, network with peers, check out the latest software and tools, etc. I’m eager to present this year, and I have a lot to share.

Q. What is Graph Search?

A. Facebook Graph Search was released in January (2013), and it’s a social search engine based on the vast information contained in Facebook. It was highly-anticipated, since many in the industry viewed it as a direct competitor to Google (or at least an attempt to pull market share from Google). Graph Search enables Facebook users to search for people, places, interests, and photos, based on the vast data contained in Facebook. It’s important to note that the verticals I just mentioned are only the starting point for Facebook Graph Search. They fully intend to make much more content visible via Graph Search, including updates and comments. As you can guess, the results are heavily influenced by your social connections. For example, you can complete a search for “Italian restaurants liked by my friends” to surface personalized content. The algorithm incorporates many factors, including likes, check-ins, friend activity, Page information, etc.
Graph Search will be continually evolving, and I expect important refinements over time. And one of the biggest refinements could be the addition of search ads. We aren’t sure yet exactly how Facebook will implement search ads, but they are coming. Google generates 96% of its revenue from paid search, and Facebook knows that. Facebook is looking for sustainable sources of revenue, and Graph Search could potentially be one of them (if people use it, the results are strong, etc.)

Q. Where do you believe the biggest privacy concerns lie in regards to social media and the emerging graph search technologies?

A. There are huge privacy implications with Graph Search (and Social Search in general). I have come across numerous examples of Graph Search results that weren’t supposed to be public… It seems that users mistakenly posted photos publicly. Graph Search can surface content that used to be buried in Facebook. That’s a big deal, and users need to double check their privacy settings. And soon.

Q. What is the latest trend and metric indicator/s regarding Facebook users and their concerns regarding privacy issues particularly with the latest Facebook Graph Search features.

A. Facebook has a long history of privacy battles. And they’ve had their share of lawsuits too. I find many users (young and old) don’t understand their privacy settings, how to find them, how to set them up, etc. That leads to a lot of information getting exposed to a larger group of people than they initially intended… And that can lead to a host of problems. People have lost their jobs, kids have gotten in trouble, thieves mine public Facebook data looking for their next job, etc. So, it’s incredibly important to understand this, but many people don’t. To complicate the situation, Facebook wants you to share more information. That information can help fuel their ad platform (by providing more granular targeting). Therefore, it’s a tricky subject for both users and Facebook.

Q. Where can we find more about you? Web sites, blogs, etc. (Any additional information you want to share?)

A. My blog is titled the Internet Marketing Driver and you can find it here: http://www.hmtweb.com/marketing-blog/ I’m also a columnist for Search Engine Watch: http://searchenginewatch.com/author/2623/glenn-gabe You can read my bio here: http://www.hmtweb.com/glenn-gabe.htm

Here’s a preview of the quality and topical insights from featured guest speaker, Simms Jenkins, CEO, BrightWave Marketing (Photo left, Simms Jenkins speaking at the 2011 Amy Awards, photo courtesy of Edward Zeltser).

Q. What does it mean to you to be a part of the leading industry event, SES New York 2013 Conference? How does it make you feel to be invited as speaker?

A. It's a great honor and a compelling event. The networking and content is top notch and you can't beat New York City in the spring.

Q. Where do you believe the majority of email marketers are today on the social media marketing learning curve for “The New Inbox” and why?

A. Email marketers have embraced social media as their best wingman and vice versa. As I wrote in my ClickZ article “Why Email Is Like Madonna and Facebook Is Lady Gaga,” Email marketers don’t need to know every detail of what works well for social media and the same goes with social media and their understanding of every technical element of an email campaign. What they both need to understand is how their customers use each channel and how as marketers each channel should be leveraged with an eye on integration. Many of our clients have wildly successful social media programs because of their email efforts in building up the social channel. You take email away and social loses some of its scale and power.

Q. Where should the majority of email marketers be today in order for their email campaign/s to be successfully integrated? (In other words, what main element should all email marketers have/be doing to integrate social media marketing regardless of their budget and product/service?)

A. Email marketers should always have specific business goals in mind and how they can deliver them to their subscribers. Some email marketers may leverage mobile, some social and some offline media to better deliver a good user experience and one that can move the needle forward on the business front.

Q. What are the two MUST HAVE social media marketing tools for email marketers?

A. I would argue the tools are irrelevant - what they need to have is a good understanding of what social media can do for their email program and how their email program can drive social. With of course an understanding that the customer is the focus of each and therefore relevant content and offers are delivered.

Q. What do you think is going the most important take away your audience can expect from your segment “The New Inbox: The Intersection of Email, Mobile and Social Marketing . How do you plan on conveying that message at your session?

A. Event preview video of the SES New York 2013 Conference featuring speaker Simms Jenkins was produced by AllThingsDigitalMarketing.com Event preview interview by AllThingsDigitalMarketing.com. Information for this video was from audio recordings from Q&A interviews and was produced with Adobe After Effects software by Maria Benevenga, Senior Design Specialist and Creative Extraordinaire.

Q. Where can we find more about you? Web sites, blogs, etc. (Any additional information you want to share?)

A. BrightWaveMarketing.com, EmailStatCenter.com and SocialStatCenter.com are our company sites. Follow and connect with Simms on Twitter (@SimmsJenkins), LinkedIn (http://www.linkedin.com/in/simmsjenkins), and his book websites at TheNewInboxBook.com and SimmsJenkins.com.
NOTE These 2 sites will launch next week.
