Happy 73rd B-Day to Bugs Bunny: America's smartest cartoon character

“Eh...What’s up Doc?”
~~ Bugs Bunny

Bugs Bunny’s most famous catchphrase introduced at the debut of cartoon short, “A Wild Hare,” on July 27, 1940

Hard to believe, the world's smartest cartoon character, Bugs Bunny, turns 73 years young today. Bugs was born with the release of cartoon short, "A Wild Hare," directed by Tex Avery, on July 27, 1940.

According to the publication "Bugs Bunny: 50 Years and Only One Grey Hare," Bugs was born in Brooklyn, New York, in a warren under Ebbets Field, home of the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Actually, he was created by many animators and staff, including Tex Avery. According to the late Mel Blanc, the character's original voice actor, Bugs has a Flatbush accent.

A Wild Hare, is the first cartoon where both Elmer Fudd and Bugs are shown in their fully developed forms as hunter and tormentor.

In this cartoon Mel Blanc first uses what would become Bugs' standard voice; this cartoon also marks the first time that Bugs uses his catchphrase, "What's up, Doc?"

Animation historian Joe Adamson deems "A Wild Hare" as the first "official" Bugs Bunny short. The short was a huge success in theaters and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film.

Mobile commerce professionals gather in New York City to attend “The Future of Mobile Commerce,” event hosted by DeSilva+Phillips and NYC Media Lab

“… We are a payment services company … we have a very good core business -- the charge card and credit card business … As we began to think about where commerce and the world may be going we realized that we needed a different strategic thinking about it …so we thought about how the world will begin to interact and so people will decide how they want to interact and they will choose based on a couple of things … convenience, security and the third one, value … When I think about convenience, if you are sitting at a computer or you may be walking around the street and we may push a deal for one of our merchants to you, you have a mobile phone because it is convenient for you to transact with that device … you may be somewhere and you have none of those things, but you have a fingerprint and that’s how I interact … so our philosophy as a payment company … we don’t pick either one, we have to let the customer choose how they interact with us. Mobile device is just a form factor.”
~~ Gilberg Ahye, Executive Vice President & Chief Development Officer, American Express Company, on his company’s view on the future of mobile commerce as quoted during “The Future of Mobile Commerce,” event hosted by NYC Media Lab, July 23, 2013

A full house audience of professionals in Mobile Payments, Mobile Advertising & Marketing, E-commerce, Analytics, Development, Strategy and Product Management gathered at Lafayette Restaurant in New York City to attend “The Future of Mobile Commerce.”

Hosted by DeSilva+Phillips and NYC Media Lab, this annual invitation only event included a wealth of insights by business leader Gilbert E. Ahye, Executive Vice President & Chief Development Officer, American Express Company. The event was moderated by Roger Neal, Founder and Executive Director of NYC Media Lab. Q&A was held after the session.

THERE WERE MANY TAKEAWAYS AND FACTS IN MOBILE COMMERCE I WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH YOU; ONE MENTIONED IN THE BEGINNING OF THE SESSION BY AHYE PERTAINED TO GEOGRAPHICS

Not surprising, mobile has surpassed the personal computer in the U.S. all while the U.S. has invested billions of dollars in POS (Point-of-Sale) infrastructure. Ahye believes POS is going to take a very long time for the U.S. to adapt fully to NFS but eventually the credit card business will be replaced by mobile in the U.S.

Ahye also mentioned that since India and China have no infrastructures in place and did not have any substantial investments in copper wiring as the U.S. did, these countries will continue to adapt to mobile commerce at a much faster rate.

Besides India and China, according to a recent Juniper Research report, emerging markets such as Brazil, Turkey, etc., are growing at phenomenally faster percentage rates versus mature markets like North America and Europe. However, consider that even with the lower percent growth rate of mobile commerce in the U.S., we still lead the world significantly in regards to the actual user population of mobile commerce.

Juniper Research stated that that the introduction of mobile wallets has provided access to poorer people in some emerging markets, where the proportion of adults without a bank account can exceed 50%. Thus, a new market of mobile users has converged.

Juniper Research also reported in June that mobile commerce transactions reached $1.5 trillion in 2013 and are expected to more than double, at $3.2 trillion by 2017.

TECHNOLOGY IS KEY WHEN IT COMES TO DISRUPTIONS OF MOBILE COMMERCE

American Express is constantly looking at various technologies and has already made investments in other countries. Ahye believes technology will determine how mobile commerce will evolve and American Express will continue strategizing and participating without picking a “winner or loser” technology.

CERTAIN TECHNOLOGIES ARE MORE PROMISING THAN OTHERS

“We know that the NFC device is probably a better form. With an NFC device you can get information. The world is about data and information. So the direction should be about data and how we get data – it is about how do you get data, how do I make the right type of offer to a customer,” explained Ahye. “What information do I get or how do I do it. If you think about American Express, I know a lot about a customer, what merchants a customer has and how much a customer spends, profile. So NFC can profile people – someone spending $150,000 on pet products we know we should push pet products to her. It is really hard to do that on a mass market so the devices need to give us information, we need to create the layer to analyze all that mobile data to promote to that customer? That is the holy grail. We don’t want to be collateral damage to get the data,” added Ahye.
There are many insights and research reports supporting Ahye’s view. Evans Data Corporation’s recently released “Mobile Development Survey 2013, 1” found that over 31% Of mobile developers today are supporting Near Field Communications (NFC) in their mobile applications and claims that an additional 45% plan to support this technology in the next 12 months.

Also included in the findings was that although NFC was the technology that the most developers plan to support in the next year, still image capture, video image capture, and GPS (Global Positioning System) are the device features more developers are supporting today.

Wow, Google created an adorable doodle today for my B-Day; You can have one for your B-Day too.

I got a really cute surprise treat this morning when I went to the computer. Google created an adorable doodle for my birthday. Happy Birthday to me, LOL. I'm amazed, and never dreamed Google would do this. The doodle has candles, cupcakes and all...What a sweet thing to do!

Thank you Google for all you do! Thanks to all my friends, colleagues and family! And enjoy a cupcake or two on me today! :)

The rewards of digital, social media, and evangelism! My best to all today! I'm feeling happy! I'm sure Google can do the same for you -- simply set up your Google+ and make sure to enter your birthday and see what happens on your special day.

First I thought it was my imagination or "was I dreaming?". But when I moused over the doodle, it displayed "Happy Birthday Gloria!"

One year ago today ~ Marketing and the importance of purpose: First of a series of “evergreen marketing insights” by Gloria Buono-Daly

The first of a series of evergreen marketing insights, initially posted on Examiner one year ago today (July 12th).

Purpose, it’s important, we all have it and use it in our everyday lives. Yet whenever one is asked to define his/her purpose, why is it so difficult to answer?
The rust on the fence symbolizes aging, no longer resilient yet still cool and beautiful. The fence, a reminder sometimes we need to stop to enjoy the beauty, be cautious and stay on track. Photo credit: Gloria Buono-Daly, taken in NYC sometime in the Spring of 2011

There are so many books/blog posts/articles, etc., both digitally and in print about personal branding and the importance of knowing your purpose. One of the many things we don’t learn in school or on the job is the importance of personal brand.

How else can you create an innovative marketing plan and understand the purpose of your plan without initially understanding the real meaning of why you are here?

Marketing, like purpose, is having a clear perspective, confidence and drive, ultimately bringing substantial contributions and value in everything you do.
Just as no two fingerprints are alike, no two marketers are alike - we all have a special and unique story that is incorporated into our work whether we are aware of it or not. There may be similar skill-sets, education, or a generic marketing plan/guideline, but it is the unique initiative, thinking and creative execution in our work that motivates us to act and accomplish.

When tackling the question “what is your purpose?” one may perceive it as networking all the time or being on the Internet all day writing, but to say this would be deceiving. Gravitating towards networking in person or on the Internet, illustrates the enjoyment and appreciation of meeting and learning about others, e.g., marketers, writers, etc.

This also illustrates an interest and enthusiasm to participate interactively by sharing comments, suggestions and ideas. This can be mentally stimulating (like reading a good book or tablet). If this action touched one person, or encouraged many to think, imagine, and improve, then this has made a difference and helped someone.

There are many reasons why purpose is a major element for marketers and personal brand. Think about it and share your thoughts, which will be incorporated into the next series article titled, "Marketing and the importance of being personal."

Here is an inspiring quote to help you find and define your purpose:
"Out of clutter, find simplicity. From discord, find harmony. In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity."
~~ Albert Einstein, German theoretical physicist, world renown as the father of Physics, (March 14, 1879 – April 18, 1955)

'One to One with Gloria' and Governor Mario Cuomo on the red carpet at The 3rd Elly Awards at The Plaza Hotel on June 25, 2013 – See what you missed video

“…The males in the family feel tinged. We better get more involved because the women in this family are making us look bad…there’s Madeline, there’s Maria and there’s Margaret the doctor who has just written a book…so when I get back I’m gonna’ say hey guys they’re coming at us … We’re proud of immigrant families … What we’re proudest of is the United States of America…” ~~ Governor Mario Cuomo, American politician and member of the Democratic Party. He served as the Secretary of State of New York from 1975 to 1978, as the Lieutenant Governor of New York from 1979 to 1982 and as the 52nd Governor of New York for three terms, 1983 to 1994; quoted on the red carpet during The 3rd Annual Emmy Awards, The Plaza Hotel, New York City, June 25, 2013

Below is the latest video, 'One to One with Gloria' and Governor Mario Cuomo during red carpet at The Elly Awards at The Plaza Hotel, New York City on June 25, 2013.

The opportunity to meet and interview political icon, Governor Mario Cuomo, about 10 days after the unveiling of his portrait at the state Capitol on June 15th which incidentally was his 81st birthday and the day before Father’s Day, was truly an amazing experience and one I will cherish for a very, very long time. Happy 237th Independence Day America!

“The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.” ~~ John Adams, American Founding Father, and the second President of the United States (1797–1801).
July 2, 1776 as written to his wife, Abigail

Visit this link The 12 best places to see NYC's July 4th fireworks! by Curbed.
Adams's prediction was off by two days. From the getgo, Americans celebrated independence on July 4, the date shown on the much-publicized Declaration of Independence, rather than on July 2, the date the resolution of independence was approved in a closed session of Congress Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. This year marks the 236th Anniversary.

Remarkable coincidence is that both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, the only signers of the Declaration of Independence who later served as Presidents of the United States, died on the same day: July 4, 1826, which was the 50th anniversary of the Declaration.

Although not a signer of the Declaration of Independence, but another Founding Father who became a President, James Monroe, died on July 4, 1831, thus becoming the third president in a row who died on this memorable day. Calvin Coolidge, the 30th President, was born on July 4, 1872, and, so far, is the only President to have been born on Independence Day.

If you happen to be in New York City today, don't miss Macy's Fourth of July fireworks display on the Hudson River which begins at 9:00pm. This year marks Macy's 37th year celebrating July 4th with fireworks in NYC. More information visit this link at Macys Fireworks!
