The opportunity to meet and interview Maria Cuomo Cole, executive producer of The Invisible War, was truly inspiring. The Invisible War, a groundbreaking investigative documentary, received the Sundance Film Festival Audience Award in 2012. Throughout her career in the public and private sectors, Cole has produced and directed short films, public service announcements and digital content to raise awareness for a variety of social issues. Cole serves as Chair of HELPUSA.ORG, the leading national developer of housing for homeless and low income populations including families, victims of domestic violence, and veterans. She also serves as director on the boards of Mentoring USA, The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, and HELP PSI.

The Elly Award recognizes extraordinary and often heroic effort in overcoming adversity and the most daunting of odds in restructuring lives for success. Grants are awarded to women over the age of 35 who, after suffering great adversity and an interruption in their education, are now pursuing undergraduate college degrees.
